The Uninvited

I made this sleeve for trashy Italian surf/garagesters The Uninvited back around 1996 or so. The 7" came out on the always suave Misty Lane label. Update Bonus: Just scanned the poster version below for Muleskinner zine outta Holland so I thought I'd throw it in here as well. Greg from The Fiends put this together back in the late '90s for a wicked show that also featured the mighty psycho rockin' Deadcats! Wish I coulda been there! Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Hip Couple

I drew this one a few years back as an entry in a T-shirt design contest put on by hip local record store Into The Music. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Crab Grab

This was a conceptual drawing for a comic strip that I never had a chance to start drawing. It's unpublished. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Guitar Rocket

This one was originally done for my friend Joseph who runs the Butterfly Records label over in Spain, and was used as the cover for one of his record catalogs. Later Willem from Swamp Room Records in Germany became enamored of this piece and used it as the poster art for one of the garage/psych concerts he was putting on at the time. It was then recycled into a generic sleeve for a whole bunch of 7"s he put out under the Swamp Room Singles Club banner. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Horror Host

For those who may be wondering just what sort of person would draw all this crazy mixed-up stuff, I herewith present this effort in photorealistic self portraiture which ought to answer all such questions. I believe this was first published in an issue of Sunburn, later retouched to reflect my current hairstyle of choice. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Too Dumb To Quit

I made this poster back in 1997 for the first of 2 Winnipeg shows by renowned Ramonified punk rockers The Queers. I'm pretty sure this was the first time the Groovie Ghoulies played here as well. It was a fun show. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Rock'N'Roll All The Way From Mars

Did this poster back in 2003 for former Dragstrip Riot! co-publisher Jeff aka DJ Dan Electro. At the time he was doing this show on college radio in Edmonton; I believe he is still doing it as part of the Garagepunk podcast empire. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Wolf Pack

Here be the cover for the debut CD by Vancouver lo-fi trash punkers Raised By Wolves, self-released by the band back in 2004. There was supposed to be a vinyl version of this thing on a Swedish label but I don't think it ever came out. This sleeve was a tribute to '50s film classic The Wild One, the original title of which was... Hot Blood. See below for the 7" sleeve I did for these guys. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Transistor Sister

This one was a promo piece for Winnipeg's hippest rock, roll and roots recordin' label, Transistor 66 Records. Some snazzy T-shirts were made featuring this here design. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Punk's Not Dead

...And why not? Here's the first UK Subs poster I made way back in 1999. This is the original version with Nardcore legends Dr. Know on the bill. They dropped off the tour so on the printed posters there was just a big black space where their name would have been. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Attack Of The 50 Foot Punk Chick

What the heck, here's the most recent of my UK Subs at the Royal Albert posters from back in 2007. We were hoping to do a small run of silkscreen posters of this, but those plans fell through at the last minute. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

I Lost My Love To A UK Sub

This is the second of three posters I made for Winnipeg shows by venerable Britpunks The UK Subs. This one features local rock legends The Squareheads with singer Anthony once more in the role of jilted Romeo. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Teen Scene

I drew the cover for this 4 song compilation 7"er featuring surf and garage combos from Ontario back in 1996. Released on hip Italian label Misty Lane Records, this is another of my old school hand separated color jobs. The tombstones feature tributes to a few great Ontario garage combos from the '60s (plus one from the '80s). Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Do It Again!

When I drew this I thought it was gonna be the front cover art of Do It Again!, the latest CD by The Independents, but it ended up inside the booklet for whatever reason. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Back From The Grave

This 'un was meant to be the cover art for the reissue of the first Independents album Back From The Grave, though it was never used as such. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Meet Me In The Morgue

Speaking of Eternal Bond, here is the poster for the tour that accompanied the release of that CD. The drawing was also used as the tray card art for the album. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Teenage Rehab

Teenage Rehab are a pop-punky combo from way down south in Paducah, Kentucky. This is the cover of their 2003 CD released on Amp Records. Notice how the protagonist of this little sequence ends up in the Rubber Room. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Never Bet The Devil Your Head

This devil head was the cover art for Eternal Bond by The Independents. On the CD cover it was printed in very dark gray on a black background for an almost subliminal effect which would be hard to duplicate on a computer screen. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Feed Me!

Just finished up this web logo design for eatingwinnipeg.com, run by hipster entrepreneur Art from Transistor 66 Records. Working on this made me hungry for those good things, baby! Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Der Weinerschnitzel

Drew this 'un back in 1995 at the behest of Mr. Bratto, maniacal guitarmeister of wild Spanish punk combo Los Ass Draggers and a fine, frantic artisté in his own right. I never actually saw a copy of The Hot Dog Magazine but it was apparently some kinda punky rock'n'roll publication coming outta the thriving Spanish r'n'r scene back in those days. I dunno if they ever used this art; if so, no one ever sent me a copy. I guess it may be making its first public appearance right here today. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Return To The Forbidden Dimension

Amazing Calgary ghoul rockers Forbidden Dimension (see my January 27 post for a bit of info on their early career) regrouped a few years back after a near decade-long hiatus and made their long awaited return to Winnipeg late in 2008. They put on a killer high energy show including many old classics and lots of great new songs from their comeback album Cool Sound Out Of Hell. Also on this power-packed bill were the garage stompin' Angry Dragons and theatrical grrl rockers The Gorgon. I was doing posters for most of the Dragons shows at the time and worked real hard to give them a cool one for such a bitchin' show but unbeknownst to me the FDs resident art monster TOMB was conjuring up his own poster for this show in his Calgary basement lair. His poster made mine kinda redundant so this one has remained mostly unseen... until now. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Kill Kill, This Is Pop

This is the cover for a mighty hip 24 track compilation of powerpop combos from all over the world that came out back in 2000 AD. Lots of great stuff on this one including tracks by The Barracudas, The Nuggets, DM3 and a cool collaboration by Paul Collins and the Yum Yums. I think this was the last of a bunch of sleeve art I did for the well known German garage/powerpop label Screaming Apple Records. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Rock'N'Roll Nightmare

From back in 2005, here's the second of three posters I did for Winnipeg gigs by the legendary Rock Warrior of the 1980s, the incredible Thor. You can't beat this guy for amazing, over-the-top hard rock tunes and the best live show ever featuring a zillion costume changes and carny-style feats of strength, all spotlighting Thor's larger than life warrior rock-god persona. This poster was inspired by a scene from Thor's cinematic classic Rock'N'Roll Nightmare wherein our hero fearlessly engages in hand-to-hand combat with the evil forces of Hell itself! Also on the bill for this show were always hard rockin' local heroes The Squareheads and Winnipeg's best ever surf/Link Wray-inspired instro combo The Rockdoras. What a night. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Monkey Mania

This was my second 7" sleeve for the cool all-girl garage combo Sit N'Spin. Came out back in 1996 on the Solamente Records label outta Brooklyn, NY. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Evaporators

Here's another poster my friend Patrick asked me to make for an Ottawa show that included his outer space garage combo The Knurlings on the bill. Legendary Canadian rock journalist, pop culture historian and eccentric Narduar The Human Serviette has been fronting the Evaporators since the late '80s and their wacky mix of garage, punk and kitsch inspired me to go all-out weird on this poster design. If Basil Wolverton had developed a glue sniffing habit he might have drawn stuff like this. Or maybe not. Anyway... Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Keep The Dogs Away

Here's the first ever poster I made for the Lonely Vulcans back in 2006. According to Vulcans guitar ace Daniel the scene depicted here actually happened while the band were out postering for a show. From the early lineup shown here only Daniel and Paul are still in the band. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Youth Against Nature

This is one of my all time craziest efforts and probably the single work that I am best known for so far. It's the sleeve of Youth Against Nature by The Monsters. Starting out with a basic psychobilly sound back in the '80s, The Monsters have mutated like a B-movie creature over the years adding lots of wild garage, punk, blues and savage Link Wray instro action to their sound. This was their third long player and came out on Record Junkie Records back in 1995. Band leader Beat-Man came up with the basic idea for this sleeve and I really went to town with the hellish detail on this evil thing. The original pressing has a neat fold out sleeve and there was a limited edition color vinyl version that came with free candy and fireworks! It has since been reissued on Voodoo Rhythm Records with the artwork altered a bit (and some parts deleted) to fit on a gatefold sleeve, which is the version you see above. A CD version was also released at that time. There was a promo poster for the original release cobbled together from various parts of the two drawings which I will eventually scan and post here. Plans are afoot for me to do a kinda sequel/reimagining of this sleeve for a very cool sounding concept album by a current rockabilly star. More on that when and if it all comes together. Thanks to Beat-Man for sending me these scans. Stay tuned for MORE APOCALYPTIC ACTION!

The Cynics

Poster for an Ottawa show by longtime garage rock faves The Cynics. I drew this way back in 2001 at the behest of my old pal Patrick whose combo The Glads opened the show. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Vulcan Death Grip

Here's a brand new one, best under the sun. It's the poster for the CD release par-tay for Winnipeg's (mostly-) instrumental luv rock hooligans The Lonely Vulcans. These guys are the only modern instro combo I've heard yet with a pervasive Santo and Johnny influence. Featuring ex-members of the Squareheads, Surfadelics (Winnipeg version, not the UK '80s guys), Accosters, Moe Bi666sley and many more, these guys (and gal) will provide the perfect soundtrack for your next last date and so much more. See you at the show, kids. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Skate Buzzard

This rather odd skateboardin' piece was drawn back in 1996. Philippe from Erase-Yer-Head Records was gonna use it for a record cover but as far as I know that never happened, so it has remained unpublished until now. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Riot On The Dragstrip!

Here's my cover for issue #4 of cool Edmonton garage zine Dragstrip Riot! from back in 1996. The '90s surf revival was picking up speed at the time so I thought I would offer a depiction of Canadian surfin' culture for this cover. Editors Allan and Jeff asked me to contribute a comic strip to future issues of the mag so I conceptualized a serialized epic about the adventures of Tot McFarlane, the spoiled rotten ultra-rich preteen tyrant of the comic book and collectible toy industry, but sadly issue 4 was the finalé for DR and I never actually got a chance to draw any of the strips. Oh well. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!
